Shaping Our Future
National Mutual Benefit’s Fraternal Leadership Seminars brought branch leaders together to be recognized for 2017 accomplishments and to plan for 2018 goals. Members networked with one another in hopes that they continue to learn how to grow their branches and be successful at making a difference in the community each branch serves.
This year’s theme, Shaping Our Future, epitomized that idea more than ever before. We strive to not only continue to serve current members in a positive way, but as a membership organization, also attract new members to help NMB grow.
This year’s seminars were held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Deadwood, South Dakota, in March. One of the highlights of both seminars was an introduction to NMB’s new President and CEO Dan Shinnick. His presentation, entitled “A Reason to Grow,” highlighted both the struggles and the successes of NMB’s 116 years in business. As the organization continues to navigate its way through a time of change, it is important to remember its main focus will never stray far from what it has always been—People Helping People in Time of Need.
Other points of discussion included the chance for attendees to share their thoughts and ideas on NMB-related topics with President Shinnick, and the opportunity to discuss how local fraternal branches and agency offices can become stronger partners in delivering NMB’s mission.
A group of district representatives led a fun workshop in which attendees asked industry-related questions in hopes that they could “stump the experts.” A panel of NMB national scholarship winners shared their stories of volunteerism, what career path they chose, and how they plan to use their past experiences to continue to help shape their future.
Former Green Bay Packer linebacker George Koonce was the keynote speaker in Wisconsin. He gave an inspiring speech called “Dream Big, Work Hard, Fall Forward”—three phrases he claims everyone should try to live by. In the Dakotas, it was Carl “Energizer” Olson who relayed messages about positive energy and ways to help connect with family, neighbors, and community.
Both seminars included a recognition banquet, where branch leaders and agents were recognized for their 2017 accomplishments. Attendees left inspired and looking forward to Shaping Our Future.
